18 stone

March 30th, 2008 No comments

Yes it’s true my weight has now rocketed back up to 18 stone. It hurts to think how I’ve drifted back into my old habits i.e eating junk or lots of food in general and not exercising.

It really does make me feel sooooo down in the dumps, not because I weigh that much, but because I’ve left myself get to that point – having only last year shed a lot of weight to get to 16st 3lbs (which made me feel more than great at the time).

Feeling sorry for myself isn’t going to help though, getting off my lazy backside and being stronger willed (in terms of food) are the only things that are going to get me out of this rut I seem to be currently stuck in.

On a brighter (well magnolia in fact) note, I’ve finally finished painting our downstairs hallway. Now there’s only the downstairs loo, and upstairs landing to do!! Still it looks good and when I’ve tidied up the coving/skirting boards, it’ll really look the mutts nuts I’m sure.

Painting at last

March 29th, 2008 No comments

Having laboured away on our wallpaper removal project at home for quite a few weeks, it was with great pleasure (relief?) that I finally put brush to paint today and did the very first coat of magnolia on our hallway walls.

It took me far longer than I’d hoped/envisaged, but at least with the weather being pants outside it meant that I didn’t feel aggrieved to be indoors. Besides, at least being indoors meant I could listen to the Swans commentary on Swansea Sound.

So it’s been a good day all round, I painted, the Swans won 3-1 at Hartlepool and now I’m seriously considering going to Carlisle a week Tuesday!

Only one downside really, the house now stinks of paint. Now where did I put those onions…

Wallpapering

February 3rd, 2008 No comments

For the first time in my life I actually did a spot of wallpapering today. Well when I say wallpapering what I mean is I put up DDWT Junior’s dinosaur border up in his new bedroom – using the good old fashioned wallpaper paste.

I now understand and fully realise why I’ve never wallpapered before and why I never intend to do so again! What a fiddly, messy palava it is. Novice or not I reckon it’ll always be the same, little wonder then that I’ve always been an emulsion man :-)

The other major downside of course is getting the old darn wallpaper off. You should have seen me struggle, even with a steam stripper. Still it’s been an experience and one which I won’t be repeating ever again I suspect!

As today was officially the last day of my enforced absence from training – due to my knee ligament injury – it seemed a sensible time to weigh myself, ths laying down a benchmark for future progress. It wasn’t a pleasant experience – 17st 5lbs. You can tell I’ve not done ANY cardiovascular training since December 19th.

Despite my frustration at only being able to do some upper body weight training, the rest has certainly appeared to help my knee ligaments, with the original pain and discomfort having now disappeared.

So it’s onwards and upwards starting tomorrow with a commute into work on my trusty old mountain bike. Fingers crossed for a safe return to fitness with no reaction in my knee.

Doctor DIY

November 26th, 2006 No comments

No I didn’t self diagnose any ailment or injury, I was merely referring to yet another Saturday spent DIY-ing. You’ll remember the dishwasher problems I had last week, well the required part (i.e. a compressor) duly arrived and I went about fitting it with gusto this morning.

The compressor part …

Before fitting …After fitting …Result – a working Candy CD950 dishwasher and a very happy Mrs DDWT – not to mention a heck of a saving on dishwasher repair mans labour costs!

I did watch the first half of the Wales v New Zealand All Blacks rugby game, but felt the desperate urge to go and do something else at half-time, rather than see my fellow compatriots get anymore of a lesson in rugby. Was I one of the few who hadn’t been taken in with the ‘we are in with a great chance of beating them (the All Blacks)’ media hype? I really shouldn’t be surprised really, as the media seem to make such profound statements everytime we play the worlds best – whatever the sport.

DDWT Junior continues to amaze us with his now seemingly incessant ramblings. Although his habit of using a ‘w’ instead of a ‘th’ or ‘s’ can be a little embaressing. Take the example of when he wants to say ‘Thank you’ and you catch my drift.

Still it’s fun just to hear him copying words and using them to make sentences. One of my favourites is “Oh don’t whorry Daddy” in response to me complaining about something.

Dishwasher destruction

November 18th, 2006 No comments

Our Candy CD950 dishwasher gave up on us the other day, in a rather load bang, smokey, trip switch, no electric in the house kind of way. Today I finally had the opportunity to take a closer look at what went wrong.

Upon removing ‘Candy’ as I shall affectionatley call her now, I found the blast remains of where the obvious bang had originated. I promptly gave ‘Candy’ a lift up and I could immediately see the somewhat black, sooty and splintered mains suppressor which had obviously given up the ghost.
Once I’d removed the suppressor, I began to contemplate how on earth was I going to get a replacement part. However, much to my surprise a quick search on google for a Candy CD950 and spare parts, prompted me to visit eSpares Ltd and hey presto there was a suppressor for the sum of £9.48 including delivery. I was most impressed and pleased. I’ll give you an update on the repairs as soon as I get the part.

It was turning out to be a very DIY orientated day as I also managed to arrange with a local builder to come and collect ALL of the spare wood we had stored in the shed – which resembled more of a bonfire stack than a shed. It helped us both, as I now had my shed back and he had some spare wood for his log burner!

Completing the hat-trick of DIY jobs was the removal of DDWT Junior’s stair gate from his bedroom doorway – as in all honesty it has now served its purpose, and especially as there is one at the top of the stairs now anyway (which wasn’t there before!).

So all in all it’s been a good day and apart from the wood removal, a great day to stay indoors. The weather has really taken on a winter feel and there were numerous heavy hailstorms today – which made the road and garden white on one occasion. Oh how I look forward to winter the a deluge of the proper white stuff. I still live in hope of having a white Christmas *sigh*
