Spring snowfall

April 6th, 2008 No comments

Like most of Wales, we awoke this morning to find a 1cm covering of snow outside – which was totally unexpected as the forecast had been for ‘light snow showers’.

Having been up since around 7am DDWT Junior and I got to see most of the snow and the snow showers, as by the time Mrs DDWT surfaced from bed (around 9am) most of it had started to melt away in the warm ‘ish spring sunshine. Come mid-morning and you’d never have said it had snowed at all!

With the afternoon sunshine, I decided to take the family down to Swansea’s new central library – which they hadn’t yet seen. Having been before I was in little doubt that they’d be impressed and I was proved correct as we spent the best part of an hour and a half in the children’s area alone!

It really is a super library and if you are ever in Swansea, then I’d recommend a visit. You can even grab a bite to eat or have a nice cuppa in the coffee shop adjacent to it in Swansea City Council’s civic centre.

I suppose it goes without saying that we couldn’t leave without DDWT Junior borrowing a couple of dinosaur books and Mrs DDWT picking up her usual batch of autobiography’s – Marie Helvin and Leslie Grantham in this case. Me well I went for my usual techy stuff, “Going to Bed With Google”!

No visit to Swansea is complete without a visit to the beach, so we took the short cut from County Hall straight onto the beach. At this point I thought it would be a good time to take a snap of the progress being made on Swansea’s highest (to be) building – Meridian Quay – since the last time I took a picture.

It’s grown quite considerably as you can see!

After last week’s weight horror show, I decided not to put added pressure on myself by weighing this week, especially as I have been exercising and watching what I’ve eaten. I couldn’t have handled the disappointment of not losing any weight this week.

Anyway, yesterday I did a 30 minute stint on the elliptical worker (10.8KM) and I did another 30 minutes today (11KM) and burnt 302 calories in the process. So I’m getting there, albeit slowly.

Pretty shitty City?

December 6th, 2007 No comments

I don’t know about where you are, but if the weather is anything like it is here in Swansea at the moment then it’s pretty shitty – i.e. bucketing down with rain and blowing a gale. No doubt the pretty shitty statement will bring back a wry smile for anyone who’s watched ‘Twin Town‘ – the Welsh equivalent of ‘Trainspotting‘ (the movie I mean!).

Rumour has it mind you, that it always rains here in Swansea, but don’t they say that about everywhere. I mean Manchester’s renowned for being cold, wet and windy isn’t it?

The weather does fit in nicely with my general mood today though as I’ve got a nasty bought of tummy trouble which has seemingly come from nowhere – and I wish it would bugger off back to whence it came! It’s not the sort of preparation I wanted (or expected) for the first of my Christmas parties tomorrow night either. How bah humbug is that!

Aching all over

August 3rd, 2007 No comments

After yet another restless night, I woke this morning feeling like I was the tin man from the Wizard of Oz who’d forgotten to oil his joints. Tsch, who says a daily dose of cod liver oil is meant to help your joints :)

Coupled this with the fact that the last couple of days commuting to/from work by bike have finally caught up with me and therefore my planned lunchtime run subsequently failed to materialise. A day lost to lethargy I’m afraid.

As I write this, the rain appears to be making a comeback here in south Wales – grrrrrrr. Oh how I wish it would go away – even if only for the weekend.

Felling trees

July 27th, 2007 No comments

Before anyone gets over excited and bends my ear about tree preservation – let me just put the record straight and say that I’m referring to 3 – already dead – trees in my garden.

How do I know that they’re beyond repair, well quite simply they’ve not grown or blossomed in over 2 and a half years – which for a plum and apple tree is not good (I’m sure you’ll agree). So armed with my trusty garden spade and tree clipper I pruned the trees back and dug them up. They are now on their way to the garden recycling depot for use as compost and bark.

On the bright side, we now have a bigger ‘play area’ in the garden and DDWT Junior can no longer use the trees as make believe catapults!

Working from home

June 22nd, 2007 No comments

Huh, little did the ‘Night Nurse’ help last night. There is no improvement on the cold front and rather than incur the wrath of my female dominated office, I opted for the safe sanctuary of the house of DDWT today and worked from home.

In all seriousness though, the number of sneezes, coughs and splutters have steadily increased over the week (and not just from me) so I’m a guilty party already as far ast the posse at work is concerned – so it was really fair for me to go into the office in the state I’m in. Mind you my keyboard and flatscreen monitor is now covered in mu….no forget that, that’s way too much detail for here.

We sat down and watched the Harrison Ford film ‘Firewall‘ tonight – mainly because of the technology related theme of course (much to Mrs DDWT’s annoyance) and it was quite good – albeit very Raiders of the Lost Arc ‘esque in Mr. HF’s roleplay. But heck, what did I expect. Worth a look, but don’t get too over-excited by the blurb.
